For my second pregnancy there was no question that we wanted Erica to be there again. Having a doula helped me feel more confident in my ability to go through labour, but also helped me feel secure about the parts of labour I was worried about. Just having someone to discuss my concerns with and answer my questions was key in feeling like I could handle anything. I felt like I could trust and rely on Erica and she was there to make sure my husband and I were taken care of completely.
Both births were complicated in different ways and involved a big time commitment from Erica. Our son was born premature at 31 weeks and our daughter was born after 5 failed inductions. Erica was available to us throughout both labours at any time of day or night including multiple middle of the night calls and hospital trips. She made such an impression on me that I recommend a doula to every pregnant woman I meet!Jenna Close
When my wife first suggested we hire a doula for the birth of our first child I didn't know anything about what a doula did. I agreed mostly because my wife was so set on having Erica. I had concerns that she would take my place. I couldn't have been more wrong.
Erica made me feel like I was an important part of the team and she was really there to support me too. She made me feel more confident in my role throughout labour and conquer my fears about birth and medical procedures in general. Having Erica there at the birth of both of our children was amazing and I couldn't imagine doing it without her. With her there I felt like I could really be in the moment with my wife instead of being concerned with how things were progressing or what was going wrong. She allowed me to be an active part of the process instead of just a nervous bystander which is what I fear would have happened had she not been there.Justin Close

“Birth matters to the mother because what she is able to do in her experience of birth will inform her confidence for the rest of her life.”– Jill Breen, Midwives of Maine
Women and their families hire doulas for various reasons. Some know all about the positive statistics around doulas. For others it may have been a friend or caregiver’s recommendation.
I have always maintained that a woman does not need a doula to have a wonderful birth experience. What she does need and deserve is knowledgeable, caring, continuous support. Doulas are trained and experienced in providing birthing families with informational, physical and emotional support.

“Overall, having a Doula made me feel secure in my choices, respected, and most importantly empowered. She helped me experience birthing my child the way I saw it. She was there by my side from pregnancy, to labour, to birthing, to post-partum care and until needed beyond that point. I will always remember her kind words when needed, her gentle touch on my scared body, her firm hands on my shoulders when I thought I couldn't do it any longer, the wisdom she shared with me, and her incredible patience!”Julie
